KEYS AND KEYBED
With us being busy over the summer months with clients restorations and sales,we did not further the Steinway restoration project. In September we managed to have a week to two on the project.
The new hammers were fitted to the stems and the action stack completed.
I wanted then to insert the complete action and hammers in to the piano to see how the hammers lined up to the strings.Apart from a section in the treble that was slightly out of line I was pleased with the result. The action will need many hours of regulation and adjustment on final fitting so that it will work perfectly and as intended when the piano left the factory. This will be for another time when all the major work is completed.
The next job was to remove the action stack and rebuild the keybed and keys.
Picture 1 shows the new restored stack seperated from the key bed.Picture 2 shows the capstans being removed. The backchecks also are removed for replacement as are the front and centre key pins.I will re use the capstans after cleaning up and burnishing. The keys will be block sanded to remove the years of grime and the next job will be replacing the key bearing felts. The key ivories are in good condition and I want to retain them.About a dozen will be replaced as they are chipped.
My next update should have details of all these future operations and hopefully this will be done in the next couple of months.
